It’s April 1st, and it would be one of the worst April Fool’s Day jokes if we didn’t feature one of our Joke Shows! This year, we travel back to 2000 for the Joke Show from The Town Hall. A Prairie Home Companion welcomed Scottish musicians Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham, and comedian/writer Monteria Ivey. Join us on Facebook at 5:00 p.m. CT this Saturday. Monteria Ivey
Comedian/author/actor/screenwriter/producer MONTERIA IVEY graduated Dartmouth College, then got his start as a comic performing in clubs across the country. He worked with Chris Rock, Dana Carvey, Ray Romano, Janeane Garafolo, and Richard Lewis, among others. He was the executive producer and host for the HBO Snaps television specials, and hosted Think Twice, the first adult game show produced for PBS. He was also both the host and a cast member on the nationally syndicated Uptown Comedy Club. He passed away in 2001 at the age of 41.
Aly Bain/Phil Cunningham
Fiddler ALY BAIN and accordionist PHIL CUNNINGHAM first met when Bain heard a very young Cunningham playing in a pub near Edinburgh. Some years later, Bain invited him to perform on his television show, Aly Bain and Friends, and they’ve been playing together ever since. Their first tour was in 1986 and they continue making music today.
Aly Bain was born in Lerwick, Shetland, and began playing the fiddle at the age of 11. After moving to mainland Scotland, he helped to establish the Boys of the Lough, one of the best-known traditional folk bands. He also pursued a solo career. His autobiography, Fiddler on the Loose, co-written by Alastair Clark, was published in 1993 by Mainstream Publishing. Born in Edinburgh, Phil Cunningham began accordion lessons at the age of three, adding the violin a few years later. At 16, he joined his brother John in the highly acclaimed Scottish band Silly Wizard. During his thirteen years in the band, his work began to broaden and he found himself in demand as a composer and performer in television, radio, film, and stage. He left the band in 1983 to pursue a solo career.
The Guy’s All-Star Shoe Band
The Guy’s All-Star Shoe Band was led by A Prairie Home Companion music director Richard Dworsky. Keyboard player, composer, and improviser in any style, he also wrote all the script themes and underscores. (www.richarddworsky.com)

Arnie Kinsella hails from New York and holds a B.A. in percussion performance from Brooklyn College. He has performed with Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks, and has recorded and performed with The Manhattan Rhythm Kings and Leon Redbone.

Yes, the Penguin joke does make an appearance on this show! This joke is a favorite for Garrison but has never seemed to get the audience response he has wished for. Once, he even delivered the joke three times during one of the almost-annual Joke Shows. It has taken on a story of its own among listeners …
Two penguins are standing on an iceberg. One penguin says to the other: “You look like you’re wearing a tuxedo.” The other penguin says: “What makes you so sure I’m not?”
